Family Employment: An Opportunity Or An Obligation?

September “What Would You Do” Series here.

Roberto started his own Bogotá based real estate brokerage business more than twenty years ago and built it into a significant venture.  Though there are few employees, the assets are substantial.  Roberto always had the dream that at least one of his children would come into the business with him.

His oldest daughter, Maria, just completed her undergraduate degree and had been seeking a job teaching and coaching athletics in Guatemala City.  Her boyfriend, whom Roberto does not particularly respect, also lives in Guatemala City so Roberto decided to give Maria an offer she couldn’t refuse.
He offered her an important “flex-time” position with his company at a high salary and helped her find a part-time coaching job with a local school.  Roberto hopes that as time goes by, Maria will become increasingly interested in and committed to the family business…

What Would You Do?

Was Roberto right to offer Maria a job she couldn’t refuse in the hopes of future full time employment? Should Maria take the position?
